Sitemeter Kerfuffle
by Lupe Lasano in internet

The popular Sitemeter web tracking service is causing quite a commotion online as new code the company released appears to be crashing Internet Explorer. Several websites noticed the problem occurring rapidly, and removed the code. Once the code was removed, normal operations resumed.

Sitemeter themselves don’t appear to have an announcement concerning the issue.

How many websites are affected can’t be predicted. The tracking code has been one of the most popular ones out there, existing even before Google Analytics made the scene.

People are being greeted by a messages that says: Internet Explorer can’t open the site: with site name here. Operation aborted. They can’t progress any further in seeing the websites.

If your website is affected, the solution is simple; remove the code until Sitemeter fixes the problem. If you don’t, you won’t have any stats to worry about because 68% of your visitors won’t be able to access your website.
